Truly I do not get the hype of this one guys 😭😭😭

TLDR: I can tell this was well researched on the NASA side of things but the story fell soooo flat for me given the hype

a few things that were my main hang-ups:
1- Joan is SO INCREDIBLY BORING LOL. I enjoyed her relationship with Frances, but otherwise, sheesh 😅 I did not find her interesting or inspiring in any way
2- the way this is advertised as a “love story” really threw me off.
in the end, I find this to be more of a reflection of the love Joan has for Frances, more than the love story between Vanessa and Joan

3- the historical aspect didn’t really jive for me. I think it would play better as a movie, just to be able to have some more visual context of the era we were in? I think I needed more historical context than we got to really get into the headspace of the times and to better feel for the women / Joan & Vanessa. I just could NOT put myself in their shoes.
4- because of the lack of historical context I felt, I did not think this was a very good representation of what women really feel like to be involved in STEM fields haha. I won’t bring out my creds on this but simply saying that “guys make jokes” and bringing up that they were the first woman to do something doesn’t do enough it justice for me???
Joan finding out about getting picked for her space flight is the only time I felt truly engaged / moved at all by this book Lol. Joan’s reaction to this (running to the bathroom to let out her emotions away from her male boss) is SUCH a better representation of “women in male dominated fields” than any of the jokes / comments / fights about “girls doing what the boys are doing”

end rant Lol

Listened to the audiobook. There were unexpected religious angles mentioned throughout the book.

6 star read. New favorite TJR. New favorite book of the year. All the feels. This book gets bonus points from me for articulating the feelings and experiences that I've had as an aunt.
