Rating: B.

I went from Empyrean >> ACOTAR >> CC >> TOG, and I give this first book a solid B. The pacing is comfortable for a fantasy novel, the characters are intriguing and lovable, there is a fun plot with some twists and turns (nothing compared to SJM’s other series though), and a sweet little YA romance vibe. I recognize that this was her first published book, but I still thought the writing was strong and I actually found less irritating repetitive language than I found in her other series (minimal bared teeth and hissing, for two!).

Celaena is a fun FMC, and I enjoyed her banter with Dorian and the others, but I just don’t buy her as a badass assassin. She seems entirely too easily startled, and compassionate, and horrified by death for her to be believable as “Queen of the Underworld.” I like Chaol, who seems like a conflicted character (always intriguing) and am interested to see where their relationship to each other goes. The king, the duke, and
their clearly sus dark magic was for sure my favorite part about the ending

It wasn’t the most thrilling or emotional romantasy I’ve read by SJM, but I am indeed looking forward to starting book 2 to see where this goes!

Wow. I really enjoyed this. I’ve heard this is the worst book of the series and if that’s the case the others are going to blow my mind. I’m excited to see where this series takes me. I’m shipping Celaena and Chaol!!!
