Bree has been in love with her best friend Sam since childhood. Sam can’t pull his head out of his keister long enough to realize he’s about to lose her. When Bree finally realizes that she’s choking on the fresh scene of pine-ing, Sam starts to realize there is one woman he’s never wanted to let go of. But can he resist the temptation to let his past wreck the only love he’s ever known?

Funny Guy is a friends to lovers celebrity romance about a successful comedian who is on an SNL type show and his best friend who has yearned for him unrequited. Both characters bonded over trauma as kids and that makes their fears about actually sealing the deal feel a lot more realistic than just “what if we mess up the friendship.”

Friends to lovers can often be hard to pull off, because at some point we all want to slap the characters upside the head and ask them to just get it over with. Here, that doesn’t happen, with Bree and Sam both being reticent about hurting the other to the point that they hurt each other. That factor made Funny Guy a much more emotional read than many other books that tackle this trope.

I’d recommend Funny Guy to fans of Vi Keeland/Penelope Ward, Lauren Blakely, and Kate Clayborn.

A sweet friends-to-lovers story - a touch of melancholy made the happy ending all the sweeter.

3.5 STARS AUDIO BOOK REVIEW

I picked up this book from my KU subscription, and of course, it's Teddy Hamilton. All my audio books have this gentleman in it. This is the first romantic comedy with him as a narrator. Sam is a snl comedian and is hugely popular. He has a broken engagement with a pop singer who wrote a song about his issues. His best friend Bree has been his bff throughout their childhood. They both had a poor upbringing. He has an ambition to never go back, but he knows every day he comes closer to one day, his life will blow up. Bree has been in love with him her whole life and is ready to move on and move with her job. But now, with his broken engagement, Sam needs her more than ever with this song out and his issues exposed. My heart hurt for Bree because she was his everything, and watching him with woman and woman was hard. She was such a great woman, and I was annoyed how much Sam didn't see it. I loved their relationship. It was so easy. It was an easy book. The plot you would know everything that was coming. But the audio was really good. I'm glad I listened to it. Loved reading about a comedian romance, they are dark in their laughs.

I adored Roxy and if Barry wrote a book about her I would definitely read it! I also Loved Salem, I wanted a little more of her too! The Epilogue is really got me in the heart for this book, but having to go through 260 pages to get there through a miscommunication trope was a little bit of a struggle. Still cute fun and easy to read.

The last friends to lovers book I read was a major letdown, so I thought to try it again with another book (this time NA)

Happy to say that my faith in the trope has been restored 😌

(Also AA shout-out!!!)

Sam is a famous comedian, famously known for being hilarious and an asshole. He and Bree have been best friends since they were kids living in a small town with bad family lives waiting to get out. They successfully did. They’ve relied on each other all their lives including when Sam becomes famous once again for his break up with the latest hot celebrity and finds himself on Bree’s couch once again.

A cute rom com, close proximity, if that’s your thing then this is for you! The relationship where they lean on each other is very sweet and after initially not liking Sam in the first couple pages, he certainly won me over by the end.

Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Publishing for this ARC!
