Waking Gods is much more fast-paced and action-packed than Sleeping Giants, and I found myself getting really sucked into this one! I have no idea if the scientific facts presented in this novel are sound or not, but it felt very believable and added a depth of realism to the storyline. This book is written in a way that feels very movie-like, and I could easily visualize all of the different elements and give voice to all of the different characters (Kevin Spacey would make a fantastic narrator/mystery man!). I am looking forward to the next book in this series!

I can't remember at the moment if I wrote a review for the first book in the series, but I find the format for these books to make them very fast-paced. Sometimes, the interview style feels a little "lazy storytelling", but on a personal level, I really don't' mind it, when it's full of interesting concepts, "ancient aliens" and mysteries....the sci-fi portion of this is mid-tier rather than super light or super heavy, which makes it all easily digestible. I also think that in audiobook format, the book is such a quick read and easy to stay engaged with, as there are different narrators for each character. Overall, I think I liked the 1st book better than this one -- the second definitely feels like it's a gap filler between book 1 and 2, but it's not pointless...in fact, again, the writing format of "interview style" means the book mostly focuses on plot and concept and for me, that is the meat of the writing, the meat of the story, so it stays interesting to me throughout.

this book was such a let down. you mean to tell me that this whole time the aliens' beef with humans, the reason why humans are significant on an intergalactic scale, is because of anti-miscegenation? it's impressive how a series about international organizations and humanity's global response to the existence of aliens can feel so small. maybe i'm projecting, but this series was positioning itself to be as expansive as story of your life or the three body problem. whether or not aliens and humans should get freaky is so uninteresting and insignificant compared to the philosophical questions raised by chiang and liu, at least in my opinion. i will admit, the last line of the book sounded promising, but i don't have much faith given that there's only one book left.

it would've gotten a half star bump because of the audiobook production, but eva's voice actress doing an extremely offputting little girl voice kinda ruined that.

Parts of this book really pissed me off, which is why it took me so long to finish it. I had to put it down for a while to breathe. However, it ended well & I really want to read the third one.
