I do love a good horror novella !! I've been searching for horror with a good amount of mycology after reading Mexican Gothic and this was perfect (+ Kingfisher acknowledging that she read the book while writing this made me scream.) The humour was a pleasant surprise too, I liked that Easton wasn't too serious like all Gothic lit protagonists are usually depicted. I feel like it did detract from the Gothic Atmosphere but I had so much fun reading I didn't mind <3

A marvellous retelling of “The Fall of the House of Usher” with a twist on gender and the destructive aspect of nature upon the human body, this is one of the most spooky books I have read this year. I will never look at hares the same way again.

What Moves the Dead is a well-paced, spinetingling retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher, with just the right amount of original worldbuilding. Easton immediately endeared themself to me, and I was interested in the supporting characters as well. Yet the greatest strength of this novel is its descriptions of nature and its mastery of suspense. I would definitely recommend the book to other readers, especially those who are interested in gothic works but struggle to stay interested in their slow pacing.

This read very YA/middle grade, I'm not sure if that was the intention. The characters were very underdeveloped (but with so much potential!) and the plot had the slow start and abrupt ending that books aimed at younger readers often have. It was amusing and the images it conjures up were vivid and well thought out.
