Well, this was a disappointment. I really wanted this to be good. I love the first five "Alcatraz" books, and I really wanted this to be a satisfying conclusion, but it was not. While the humour was quite good in a few places and I liked how Bastille's voice differed from Alcatraz's, mainly because of different authors writing them, this book just didn't really hit the "Alcatraz" tone for me. I was also a bit disappointed by the climax. Like, this is the last book in the series, we've had five years of build-up for it, and that's it? Really? But these two complaints would've still given this a 3. It was the fact that
Alcatraz's dad was brought back to life
that really irritated me and made me finally decide I didn't like this book. Retcons are not a good writing practice.
Overall, I am very disappointed in this one, especially considering the quality of the others.

This middle-grade series finally has a conclusion and, though I'm giving this 4 stars, it's a very satisfying one. The prose doesn't always feel up to snuff sometimes, partly for narrative purposes as this entry is "being written" by a character lacking writing experience and an understanding of emotions, and occasionally creates a passive reading experience where my eyes kind of gloss over a couple pages until the next event happens.

Still, it's a conclusion that was worth the wait and gave me that funny feeling you get when a story is finally over.

A satisfying conclusion to the series. I liked the perspective of Bastille. It was funny to see things reversed after five books of Alcatraz not understanding the Free Kingdoms, now we get a book of Bastille not understanding the Hushlands. Whiny and mopey Alcatraz got a little old but I suppose it had to be done. Good ending and wrapped up well.
