Had always assumed this was a sweeping epic, but typically for Dostoevsky it's extremely granular: the crime happens at the end of part 1, the punishment comes in the epilogue, the rest is the inevitable funeral march from one to the other. Really enjoyed how this pushed our protagonist's resolve to breaking point, and then spends hundreds of pages seeing just how far it can really go.
