One of the strongest of the series, here Gaiman's ambitious reach and grasp largely align as he spins several different historical/mythological tales within the Sandman universe. Seeds of historical trivia become larger plot elements as each of the characters wrestles with his or her own deeper questions--and our titular 'tagonist operates both with his expected emotional distance yet a subtle note or two of . . . is that empathy, there?
