DID NOT FINISH

This is what happens when your IRL book group picks a book that is objectively fine, very good, but just isn't what you want to read. You feel bad, but DNF by page 50 just because you'd rather read something else - life is short and there are too many books that promise a more meaningful experience. Am I a selfish group member? Fortunately it's the kind of book group that seems to discuss the book for 10 minutes, followed by 90 minutes of free range talking.

I had a hard time keeping track of who was who, which made it tricky to follow.

I read the first of the Shetland series and thought 'meh' - not bad, but not great. Took me a long time to pick up this one, which is the third: I haven't read the 2nd and the 4th is already published. I was very pleasantly surprised by how much more I like her writing now. The characters are less angst filled and more believably (though there is still plenty of angst) and far more likeable. The story is well written and plotted, everything is not tied up neatly, but there are no loose ends to make you despair. I'm looking forward to picking up the next one, though I may still skip number 2.

Got off to a slow start but overall a very satisfying mystery in the excellent Shetland series.

Dragged out too long. Took almost 3/4 of the story before it was even determined that it was a murder.

An excellent back and forth goes on before the final exposing of the culprit. Well situated and well described the feeling of the island really comes through.
