I cannot say enough good things about Alex Easton. Their character is absolutely amazing and T Kingfisher does such a fabulous job of weaving an evolving character with so many moving pieces intellectually, psychologically, and personally on a historic level that it truly is Kismet in written form.

If this were not part of a series and I had read it as a standalone this would easily have been a 4.5 or 5 star read. It only goes down in points when I compare it to the first book which was absolutely 10 out of 10. I feel like as dark and mystic as this second book in the series was, it definitely could have delved a little bit more into the lore and the disparity between Easton being the trustworthy omniscient narrator we know them to be and the psychological warfare they endure when it comes to PTSD and mysticism blending together. That horror aspect could have taken this to a whole other level had it been emphasized more, especially in the same detail that was done in the first book.

I was thrilled for this release after really enjoying What Moves The Dead and I excitedly awaited the return of Alex, Hod, Miss Potter and Angus.

Kingfisher as always, created a flawless setting. Their atmospheric and detailed descriptions transported me deep into the wintry Gallacian Forests and inside the creepy hunting lodge. Kingfisher really has a talent for creating endearing and likeable characters, with the return of our favourite foursome and the introduction of several new personalities. I loved the sweet and mild mannered Bors and even the mean old Widow had a likeable quality adding humour and sass to the story. I was completely invested in the fates of each and every character in this novel and that kept me engaged until the end.

Unfortunately, this is where my praise dwindles. Kingfisher is one of my most beloved authors, so I am sad to say that the storyline and plot for What Feasts At Night just didn’t live up to its predecessor. Far too little actually happened to progress the story and the threat was passive at best until the very end. Unfortunately there were no real suspenseful moments for me either and the conclusion left me disappointed and underwhelmed.

That being said, I will still immediately buy anything Kingfisher writes and I still maintain my love for this author and their books. This particular book just wasn’t my favourite.

I am so fond of T Kingfisher's writing that you should probably take my bias into consideration. Kingfisher could present me with a word salad and I'm sure I'd eat it up. I loved this, of course. I found the climax to be quite spooky in its imagery. I loved the characters. I loved the old quiet lodge near a tiny rural town setting. For such a short book, the start does feel a little slow before the supporting cast shows up.

i would almost give this a 3-3.5 for being underwhelmingly spooky compared to the first book, but i do just love t. kingfisher’s writing so it’s not like i didn’t enjoy myself.

pros: angus and miss potter are cute. easton continues to be a grounded protagonist that takes you with kan. the creepy imagery. when it finally showed up, did not disappoint.

cons: the monster reveal didn’t come until much later, and it concluded fairly quickly even for a novella. maybe i just wasn’t in the mood for a slow burn horror right this second, but i did have a good time

I'm so glad we got more Alex Easton.  I hope there's more after this.

We also got to see Gallacia, which was fun.

I enjoyed seeing Ms. Potter and her phrasebook.

Good times all around.
Except for the sleep apnea monster.  She was probably was less fun for the characters involved.
