Gabriela Rose is everything Stephanie Plum is not. All of my complaints from the very first Stephanie Plum book were rectified in this book by Gabriela Rose. She is a total bad ass there is no doubt about that but there was just something missing in this book.

The Stephanie Plum series is one of my very favorite series of all time but this book didn’t even come close to that series. It was uninteresting and all over the place. There was more than one occasion where I was left wondering what in the historical hell are they talking about. How do they know all of this stuff. It was just simply unrealistic.

So let’s dig into the nitty gritty. First of all there was no, literally zero, character development. Which in turn caused me to care less about any of the characters. I honestly don’t really like Gabriela and Rafer was not much better. My favorite was Pepe and he wasn’t all that great either. I really hated all the killing, especially the ones by El Dragon’s hand, they just felt really unnecessary and didn’t add anything to the story. It was also super off putting that none of the characters really had any feelings about all the killing. They were all like, well that sucks, and then just moved on with their ridiculous treasure hunt. And then there was El Dragon himself, he felt like a caricature of a bad guy. He was just silly and unbelievable. His beliefs, the green smoke, disappearing. It just felt really childish.

All in all this just didn’t do it for me. Will I read the next in the series, sure I will, but hopefully this series gets better because I won’t be able to hang in there if book two is just more of book one. This series get one more shot from me.

Gabriela Rose is a recover agent, hired by people to find lost treasures, hidden heirlooms or missing assets. Her latest job is for her family though not a billionaire, and their home is riding on her coming up trumps. Jetting off to Peru to find some lost treasure, Gabriela finds herself working side by side with her ex husband Rafer. Can the two of them put their differences aside to find the treasure and save their home town?

I picked this up to listen to as an easy read, again looking for a break from the crime thrillers I tend to gravitate to. It was a great book for light relief, almost a palate cleanser for my ears.

I had no idea what to expect from this one, but enjoyed the early books in the Stephanie Plum series and figured Evanovich is probably a good choice for something a bit different. It definitely fit my criteria.

I liked Gabriela. She's a lot more competent than Plum, and can definitely hold her own coming up against treasure hunters, drug dealers and thugs. I liked that she doesn't need a guy to save/help her all the time. Basically she's a badass!

Storyline wise it's fast paced and full of plenty of action, but not a lot of details on the how and why. The characters jet around from place to place hunting treasure, but there's not an awful lot of expanation on how they know where to go. The book is also chock full of banter and sexual tension between the two main characters. Think action movie but in book format.

Ultimately this delivered on what I was looking for, which was some light relief and a change of tone, but I won't be rushing out to read the rest of the series.

Probably would have DNF if the book wasn't so short.

Basically, female Indiana Jones, just not quite the same level of cool.
