The story may be simple, but it concludes the trilogy in a stirring fashion. My only real complaint is that a couple of key characters get sidelined through large chunks of the book, and it feels like some necessary plot happens offstage that readers could have witnessed. But the central relationship (Caramon and Raistlin) that is the core of the trilogy continues to shine here.

Best book of the series so far. Characters beginning to shine through and the world starts to come together.

Gods this is good. I read this like 10 years ago and only remembered the gist of it and I can't wait to forget and then be sucked in again into the Abyss of this story.

A lot of flash, but not a lot of substance.
Liked:
1. Coming full circle. This series has been chiefly hit or miss for me. I've liked quite a few aspects of this and disliked several aspects. This book was the ultimate ending for one of the quintessential fantasy series of the late 20th century. It wraps things up nicely and paths the way for new heroes to take center stage.
2. Returning. Returning to the present was the thing we'd been waiting for. It's pretty nice to have Tanis reunite with his buddies, and ultimately take down Fistandatilus.
3. Kitiara finally biting it. Kitiara hasn't been one of my favorite characters. I feel like she hasn't had enough time to develop, which is another major complaint of mine. But her finally dying was quite satisfying.
4. The siege of the Tower of High Sorcery. This was probably the most memorable part of the book. It was rather fun, which reminded me of some platforming videogames having Tas riding his dragon and having to navigate to collect Tanis and Caramon.
Disliked:
1. Undercooked garlic. These characters are still very vanilla in my opinion, many of them don't have enough garlic of character for me to give a damn about them. Crysania still is lacking depth, as is Par Salian.
2. Too short. As the intro to this review says, this book has a lot of flash, but not a lot of substance. This book is way too short. It's like 330 pages. I feel like this could have been at least 450 pages.

A wonderful conclusion for the trilogy. Raistlin helped someone else without other motives for a change, Caramon grew up and stood up to his brother, we got to see Tanis again, Tas was...himself and a bit more. Glad that this was my first book of 2021.
