Maybe more of a three and a half stars? The last third hooked me good, but I struggled to engage for the first few chapters -- I actually started reading this back in 2021 and stopped. I gave it another shot because it's this month's selection for a local book club I'm part of, and I'm glad I did, and now I have to get the next book in the series thanks to that last sentence *shakes fist at Novik*.

Probably my biggest challenge with the book is the, I'm not sure if it's fair to call it infodumping? El just spends a lot of time explaining -- not just the environment, but her thought processes and decisions. It is documenting some of her character arc, but it makes some sections laggy. It's the thing that most makes this book feel YA-ish, to me. But I'm a sucker for a character who's a cactus with a heart of gold.

this book was so unexpectedly good. the book dragged on but like it a great way, like I actually felt the moments have been rather like just like fly through and I was able to savour it.

the magic system in this place is actually just so insane and brilliant, it really is a master class in painting such a vivid world actually engaging the reader as opposed to standard fantasy where you don't understand what's happening to the first five chapters.

the characters were absolutely perfection Galadriel is my actual babe, I love everything about her she is so complex I love her so much.and he's just Orion.

I love the school dynamic the friendship dynamic and the look into the social/magic class system and the meritocracy I love this book so much.

Also I hate the scholomance, literally so exhausted just thinking about

this is a major contender for best book of the year
