For being 400 pages this book felt like it was 800 pages long. There was FULL pages of description so frivolous I found myself completely lost at times. It sucks too because I loved bits of Orek and Sorcha's romance but.. I'd truly never be able to force myself to read this book again.

I can usually read 3 400 page books in a week. This book took me almost two weeks to finish.. and that's with heavy skimming. I personally don't find myself able to mesh with the writers work but I'm sure others will. That being said, I did enjoy a lot of parts of this story.

Everything seemed resolved satisfactorily at 66%, but FMC stupidly wants to return home & I don’t want to read another 160 pages of unnecesssry angst.

Nothing wrong with this book, just too long and too slow for what I want right now.

Sorcha and orek (and darrah the racoon)

A sweet and VERY spicy monster romance (like for real they had countless amounts of sex lol)

I appreciate that orek was a half orc and actually very weak compared to other orcs. It was fun!

I just could not finish it.  The s.x was boring, I love cozy books but went too far, there wasn’t much happening. The words my female and my male came up too often. The story is there but buried deep. There’s too much fluff and not enough story  I tried so hard to finish it, but I could not read for more then 5 minutes before it would lose my interest and I found myself on my phone.

I can best describe this book as the warmest of cozy fantasy romances. If you want to read something that is basically the book form a giant hug right when you need it, this is it.

Looking for something that is pure vibes and emotion? Please read this. That’s not to say there isn’t plot or adventure here, but it’s mostly a story of two people learning how to heal and find themselves, and within that, each other. Even the tragedies are journeyed through in a way to bring hope and solace.

Orek is a character who could easily come off one note, but is handled with wonderful nuance by the author’s descriptions and keen understanding of how to display his tragedies and the shortcomings they’ve created for him as an adult. Sorcha is the epitome of an eldest daughter without being turned into a caricature or her family villainized. She is me and I am her.

And I really loved their love story. It’s almost painfully slow, but to have it any other way would be a disservice to their characters. And when it finally happens, it’s explosive and the spice does not taper off.

I can see how others might find parts of this story repetitive or over-written with the level of description. But anytime I found myself skimming, I always went back to gather the details. Very cleverly, the book doesn’t end once the romance is earned, and it’s a refreshing reminder that “I love you” isn’t the end all be all. There are lives to live and difficulties still to be overcome. I particularly enjoyed the back half of this book and spending time with a wider cast of characters - which it seems will be explored as the series continues with interconnected standalones.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, straight to the point romantic romp (I love those too!) this may not fill the gap, but if you want to fall deeply in love with a new world and some flawed beings with absolute hearts of gold - pour a cup of tea and curl up in a blanket and crack this book open. I promise you won’t regret it!

This was such a cozy, sweet story! It was so refreshing to read an actual slow burn with great character development and intriguing world building. While I loved Sorcha, Orek was everything and the absolute perfect cinnamon roll with a side of badassery. I do think this was a touch long, but that didn't detract much from my overall enjoyment.

I loved this story! The characters were lovable, their fight was admirable, and the writing was great.

I was skimming at the end, the tension resolved a little too quickly.
