This was a reread for me because I discovered it's a trilogy but didn't remember enough from this. I'm curious what's gonna happen next, what happened with the epilogue... Kinda crazy. It was amazing, interesting formating and i liked how it helped further and develop the narative. The characters sometimes feel a bit unrealistic and I think they're a bit clichey, but again, because of the formating and limited information we get it may be because of that? Overall very good, I think that's reinforced by being a reread. Can't wait for the rest of the books and to see where the story goes.

I honestly loved this book. I thought the story was quiet unique and I’m a sucker for the format. I know the comparison has been made already, but seriously I do not read horror books and this format not only brought me into WWZ, but it took me all the way to the end, and that book is still one of my favorite books to recommend to people.

That being said, he did get a bit creative with how he kept up the format through the whole book. I understand it wasn’t for everyone, but I didn’t think it hindered the story at all. It felt like a government controlled project from start to finish really.

Some of the incidents that happen though, those felt a bit too convenient. I understand that there is Mr. No Name pilling a lot of strings, but seriously? The ONE thing in all of the book they needed, but had no idea how to get, to make Themis work properly were legs that fit in the apparatus. So conveniently an ex-lover of pilot 1 is so distraught that he needs to potentially kill someone. Well he didn’t kill anyone, but he did manage to mutilate the pilot 2, making it as easy as a shrug of a shoulder and all the gov’t funding available to suddenly have the right kind of legs to pilot Themis. I’ve read all the way through the second book already and nothing explains how convenient that one thing is, but it’s huge and it just happens to happen? There are a few other little things that just seem to pop up, but I think mostly they end up explained in one way or another.

As for character creation and world building, well it’s on earth after all, and the time line is pretty familiar to what we have going on now, so I would say the world was pretty easy. I did love how he managed to wrap up in a nice little bow Greek mythology. As far as characters go the only character I felt like, even with two books, I never got to really know, was Kara. I wish I had gotten to know her a bit more.

Over all though, I thought the story was very unique. I found it captivating and not hard at all to want to read. Even in the non action moments, I was absorbed.

Although the plot and themes are almost entirely different, the writing style of this book reminded me often of The Martian by Andy Weir: someone who is not a particularly great writer in the literary sense comes up with an excellent plot idea and makes it work. A girl falls into a hole while exploring the woods near her home and lands on a giant metal hand. Twenty years later, she is an accomplished scientist and so is included when another enormous body part is found thousands of miles away. Great story, but I have to say I enjoyed it more in the first half. Not sure if I'm going on to the sequels.
