Heartbreaking yet hopeful.

My heart definitely broke for Anna and her siblings as they struggled with trying to function normally while dealing with their mother's mental struggles and a father who is barely around. But they way everyone deals with it and, eventually, come to find a beginning to a solution provides so much understanding and hope that was so beautiful.

CW: racism, discussion of suicide/attempted suicide recounted, mental health issues leading to institutionalization, emotional/physical abuse, bullying, animal cruelty

This was such a beautiful little book. I truly appreciated how the author wrote about mental illness/psychosis in a very kind and understanding way, emphasising that the mental illness does not define a person and their personality. It was heartbreaking to see the character go through what happened in this book but she did it with so much grace - I just loved it!

Overall a good read. I don't think I've read a book with a portrayal of parental mental illness like this before. The penultimate ending felt a little too neat (especially the Newtown sharehouse bit) but I think maybe I just need to stop reading YA.
