Oh my gosh, I am so glad I picked up this manga! I was intrigued by images I had seen of the art style so I decided to buy it on a whim. I'm so glad I did! While the story is not necessarily anything new, I like how simple it is. Tanjiro stayed the night in the village down the mountain where he lives, comes home to find his family killed by demons and his only remaining sibling, Nezuko, was turned into one. I love how the bleak art style enhances the dread and despair in certain scenes, like when Tanjiro and Nezuko are attacked by a demon slayer. The bleak white background coupled with the simple black drawings and shadows really added to the despair Tanjiro must have felt. The mangaka's use of shadows also lent itself in dramatic scenes, such as his fight with the demon during final selection. The simple character designs were appealing as well; they had an ancient feel to them, like this was created centuries ago. I love how even though Nezuko is a demon she refuses to hurt her brother, and even when there were humans for her to eat she was more concerned about her brother's safety as he's being attacked by a demon. I also love the emphasis on decisive and quick thinking when it comes to slaying. As a huge fan of shonen action series, I have gotten used to page-long thoughts the main character is having over what they should do. In this case, you overthink you either die or get seriously injured. This quick thinking also helps the pacing of action scenes which is always a plus. I could go on and on about how great this first volume is, but I'll leave it at that for now. I can't wait for volume 2!

I’m so excited to see Tanjiro’s journey! He’s already put his life on the line for his sister so let’s see him become the most skilled demon slayer in the last century

*2024 Reread
Really good first issue. Does everything that it needs to. Sets up the basic premise. Introduces up to interesting and complex characters. Sets up for future issues. And leaves off on a cliffhanger to entice you to pick up the next issue. I will also say that I love Nezuko and that is that.
