An interesting and engaging listen. While listening I realised how truly little I knew of the victims of the Ripper and how little they are generally focused on in the narrative of his crimes, they are dismissed and deemed unimportant in comparison to the man himself. This book did them justice, it explored each of them individually and showed the highs as well as the lows of their lives. It explored how their circumstances changed as their lives went on and societies role in this and in the misunderstandings laid around them. It was interesting to learn about how oftentimes normal each of their lives were for the time and how they married, had children, and jobs which may have caused them to be miscategorised as sex workers which has caused prejudice ever since.

The conclusion brought the problems relating to the way people view these women into light and how it is rooted in misogyny even now.

Sad to think media has been warped even this far back to write stories with biased narratives… This author changed that. What an honourable way to pay tribute to the victims of Jack the Ripper… and to hear who they really were. Disheartening to hear of the living conditions, described in such depth, it really sank in… a history lesson that truly held my attention.

This is a book that focuses on Jack the rippers victims.   It does not portray them as prostitutes, but as down trodden women in a male dominated world.  It focuses on their human side.

Non-fiction is not for me, but this book was well-written and informative. The stories of each of the women were compelling and sad, and the audiobook narrator was great.

This book has been recommended to me so many times, and I Finally got around to reading it.  The research Hallie Rubenhold  has done  for her book is exemplary,  considering that a lot of the information and documents  are  missing or just lost over time . she gave  the  five women who were victims   Of Jack The Ripper  a voice, and she made them human. You cannot  fail to  see  the misogyny and dehumanisation of  the  murdered women, And women of the poorer classes at that time . This  is a fantastic insight  and rich with detail of the victorian era,  and social history. one of the best books I’ve read . 5.75⭐️
