In a way, I kind of regret reading these books way out of order. Because I already knew how this would end for the main characters. Still, the book was decent enough and kept a good pace all the way through. It was harsh and bloody just like the last one, and did a very good job of nodding to the prequels as well as setting up for the next series.
I kind of feel like I should give this book an extra star just because the Clary and Jace drama was very toned down. There was still love angst, but it wasn't as pronounced. Though I really could've done without the Maia and Jordan love angst. Like, why was that even necessary? My heart hurt for Jordan and the Maia drama just made the whole thing feel empty, somehow. Simon and Isabelle continued to be my favorites, though. I ended up rooting for them ten times more than Clary and Jace, and even Alec and Magnus to a degree.
The actual story, as I said, was pretty decent. It had so many dark moments. Some of the deaths, though, felt pretty pointless. Jordan is a notable one, as I mentioned. Maureen also felt pretty pointless. This chick supposedly (I still can't really buy it) kills Camille and then she's offed super easily. Was she supposed to be seen as a threat? Because she just came off as crazy and pathetic. Raphael's death hurt, as did Jordan, pointless though it was. And I actually choked up at Sebastian's death. That is a pretty good achievement when he came off as creepy and unsettling for most of his time in the books.
So, yeah. Maybe I would've enjoyed this book more if I hadn't read the series out of order and wasn't spoiled on what was coming next. As it was, it was still fairly enjoyable. The last three of this series were far better than the first three.

I started the year with Cassandra Clare and now as the year comes to a close I read another of her series.
The Mortal Instruments is an incredibly interesting series; personally, I found the 4th book dragging slightly and the 5th rather odd but the rest was very well written for young adult fiction and beautifully crafted as stories. Personally, I enjoyed the Infernal Devices series a bit more due to the language and the way the story felt slightly more flushed out, however it was completed several years after this series and even within this series you can feel the change in writing over time.
Overall I believe they were very good books and would recommend most people to give them a chance (even though a couple of the characters can be slightly annoying especially towards the beginning, although I find this makes more relatable characters).

What a great ending! Wrapped up all the loose plot ends, AMAZING character development, and so much growth and maturity from City of Glass. I loved all the throwbacks to the Infernal Devices series (my faveeeeeee).
I cant believe I read this in a day and a half, but the pacing was so good? Really hard to put down because everything was happening all at once.
I'll reread this one day but still be completely affected because I love the characters so much.

What a roller coaster, I can’t believe I DNF-ed this as a teenager. This felt like 3 books in one so much happened. I remember not caring for Emma Carstairs but now I am truly very attached to her and the Blackthorns. Jordan’s death was very upsetting but I understand how it fulfilled his character arc well. I did also find it a little funny how drawn out Sebastian/Johnathans death scene was but it was heartbreaking—though, I wished Jocelyn had more of a reaction. Simon’s memory loss hit me the hardest & this epilogue probably impacted me more than the Clockwork Princess one, somehow. All the lose ends tied up, all the easter eggs. I wish Tessa hadn’t been so vague in her conversation with clary and I wish she’d directly interacted with Jace—same with Emma and Jem.
After 5 years, several rereads, many library loans, and a tv show... I finally did it, I finished the mortal instruments
No words.
This was a beautiful end to the series, seeing characters from the Infernal Devices return, their story re-told. The ending, Clary and Jonathan and the way everyone continued their lives. A beautiful ending. I absolutely loved this.
