there was pain, crying, laughing and happiness, it was the perfect ending :)
Well done conclusion. Looking forward to the next series.
We are all the pieces of what we remember. We hold in ourselves the hopes and fears of those who love us. As long as there is love and memory, there is no true loss.

This was a beautiful ending to this series. Many times during this book, the language Clare uses to describes scenes and relationships is beautiful. I appreciated the complexity of the end of this series, the introduction of new characters (really love Emma, Julian, and the Blackthorns!), and getting to see an ending to this series that was both satisfying and left our characters in a good place, even with the sense of challenges to come. I appreciated that it wasn’t all a happily ever after, though given the number of casualties it does seem surprising that a more significant character wasn’t lost in the final battles. (Jordan’s death was quite significant, but it did come early in this book.)
I really appreciated Simon’s character arc and sacrifice in this story, which in the end I think will be happier given that he never felt like a true vampire, but certainly losing his memories was a heavy burden. I think Raphael’s loss did cut us short from trying to understand a truly morally gray character. I appreciate Clare’s willingness to get into difficult topics, including the deep complexity of Clary and Jocelyn both hating and mourning for Jonathan, Maya’s valid and complicated feelings toward Jordan, Lightwood’s marriage, the Blackthorns’ and Emma’s orphanhood and children having to grow up too fast, family discomfort with LGBTQ space, and the complexity of immortality and different couples’ choices around it (Simon and Izzy, Magnus and Alec, and Tessa and Jem all representing different experiences).
Despite all my praise for this particular book, I didn’t feel I could quite give it 5 stars given my general up and down/4 star feelings about this series, along with my difficulty truly feeling attached to Clary in the way I’d like to. I always felt a bit of a disconnect, which I don’t often with most main female characters (at least those intended to be likeable, which is mainly what I read). I think it’s that I still sense a lack of maturity and connection to other female characters, which obviously Clary grows and improves a ton in this regard over the course of the series but is still there. I mean it is YA and she’s only 16 so this certainly makes sense but overall in this series, it did impede my ability to deeply connect to her as a character.

Too long. Simon though 🥰
