5/5 for racing enthusists.
0/5 if you even remotely like dogs.

I absolutely loved this book. I was a little apprehensive about a book written from a dog's perspective, but Stein did a brilliant, captivating job, and really had me convinced that a dog was telling this story. Lovely, heartwarming and incredibly well-written.

I read this book years ago on a whim; my grandparents gave it to me, probably because of the dog on the cover, and I remember reading this as a middle schooler without knowing anything about what was in store. This book just absolutely, from that moment on, stuck with me, and it continues sticking with me now at the age of 25. I have reread this book over and over again (though it has been awhile, which means I’m due for another!), to the point where the front cover is definitely worn and a little tattered, and I still got emotional each and every time.
This is truly just a special book, and it came into my life at a time when I never even knew I needed it. It’s honestly up there as one of my favorite books that I’ve ever read.

I thought this book was really fantastic, what would your dog say if they could talk?

Sorta read. I guess I fall into the camp of people who didn't like this book rather than the ones who gave it a five star rating. I found it so over the top anthropomorphic that I couldn't finish it as hard as I tried to like it. Don't get me wrong--I love dogs and dog stories but part of the reason that I love my dogs is that they don't bother to watch out the windows to see if the buses going by are on time. They always know the time and the sound of the bus that brings their person back but all the other buses appear to be quite unimportant to them. They appear to have the gift of only focusing on what is truly relevant to them and not what we think should matter to them in a cutesy way.

The idea of a dog narrator is neat, but Enzo feels a little TOO wise to be entirely believable. The story is engaging and thoughtful, though, I mostly enjoyed it.
