I went into this expecting a classic whodunit mystery—you know, the Agatha Christie "And Then There Were None" setup where you're trying to figure out which character is the killer. I actually enjoy those types of stories, even though they've been done countless times.
For most of the book, I was completely bewildered. I couldn't make sense of what was happening. Were they being drugged? Was it some kind of mold or toxic fumes? I genuinely thought several characters were conspiring together, targeting Ada and the others who died early on.
The setting was genuinely compelling—an abandoned carnival on an island has this wonderfully eerie, urban decay atmosphere that I absolutely loved. That part was perfectly executed.
But ultimately, I wanted something different. The story reminded me too much of Stephen King's "IT." Supernatural horror plots just don't resonate with me because they feel too removed from reality. I have the same issue with supernatural horror movies. I much prefer psychological thrillers because true crime elements and serial killers feel genuinely frightening and plausible—that realistic terror hits much harder for me.
