En av de bästa böckerna jag någonsin läst. Första gången jag läste Pesten tyckte jag att den kändes lite för grund för att bli en fullpott, men år efter år har mina tankar återkommit till boken. Det var något med den som inte släppte taget. Kanske behövde jag mogna lite för att se djupet i den här berättelsen, kanske behövde jag bara befinna mig i något slags inre lugn för att kunna ta den till mig.
Att läsa Pesten under coronapandemin är bland det bästa man kan göra för boken - allting har sin tid och ”Pestens tid är nu” (som någon journalist nyligen skrev). Bokens betraktelser av kärlek/relationer och subtila filosoferande över människans existens kommer verkligen till sin fulla rätt när ens vardag plötsligt blivit skrämmande lik den som beskrivs i Pesten. Kommer på mig själv med att plocka upp boken för att försöka landa i vad som händer rund omkring i världen. Camus berättelse är både intellektuell (pesten som metafor och symbol för mänskligheten är otroligt träffande) och fantastiskt vacker, rekommenderar alla att läsa den. Vilken skatt till bok!

This is a solid classic. Very interesting to read post-covid, and the introduction in this edition does a great job introducing the themes.
Some passages were a bit tiring/hard to read but overall a great and interesting read! I like how it explores historical/political issues as well as morality and reading more about it and Camus' own background helps understand it a bit better imo

After finishing this novel a few weeks ago its words have been stuck firmly in my mind, and one felt it so apt given the current global situation here in 2020. Overall, it does give hope for people stuck in a situation of quarantine or isolation that there is life as normal on the other side but that going through hardship is inevitable. The absurdism theme prevalent throughout highlights that there are three different options for humans; to either take their own life, to choose to believe in a divine entity or an order (to take a leap of faith), or to accept the absurdity and create their own meaning in life - and the third choice is the one that is advocated.
Through the different characters' eyes; a doctor, a journalist, a priest etc. Camus shows us how these individuals respond when faced with imminent suffering and probable death. It is based upon a cholera epidemic which had happened in Algeria in 1849, but the story is set in the 1940s. Camus stated that it was an "allegory of the French resistance to the pestilence of Nazism and German occupation during the Second World War."
It is most definitely worth the read, and I believe it to be one of the most important philosophical novels.

podría decir tantas cosas de este libro... pero voy a empezar diciendo que estoy absolutamente enamorada de la mente y la forma de escribir de camus y sin duda se ha convertido en mi autor favorito (sólo superado por cierto profesor de oxford).
cuando lo empecé empecé no podía parar de pensar en cómo estaba relatando casi palabra por palabra todo lo que vivimos nosotros mismos hace unos años, en como "al principio nada había cambiado" y luego estábamos condenados a revivir un pasado con el que no podíamos hacer nada. si bien es imposible no estar pensado todo el rato en nuestra propia expriencia, llega un momento en el que entiendes que hay un significado más allá de la epidemia. inquebrantable espíritu humano enjoyers, este es sin duda vuestro libro.
