Great beginning for a book that's quality wanes as it goes on with minor peaks. Kind of depressed me nondiegetically in that Camus' characters come together in the face of the plague to fight against it, an optimistic cultural study, and yet the reality in our technological epoch is anything but. Sad. Either way, this has a reportage style that I didn't particularly like. Essay-Camus came to play rather than Novel-Camus stylistically, and that choice irked me enough to make me feel like its 352-page length is excessive. Still enjoyed some of it. Much of it no.

A loveless world is a dead world...
And there can be no peace without hope.

In the French Algerian city of Oran, after thousands of rats dying in the streets, bubonic plague spreads throughout, sweeping the city, leaving behind devastation and despair.
The gates of the town are shut, travel to and from Oran, even sending and receiving mail is prohibited.
Hence the human struggle begins.
What should one do? Find a way to flee the city, or stay and fight the plague?
Become a hero or be a coward?

The evil that is in the world always comes of ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence, if they lack understanding.

Goed boek.

Read during covid lockdown. Had high hopes but remember feeling disappointed throughout the entire read. May have to give it another go.

"But what does that mean—'plague'? Just life, no more than that."
