Heartbreaking and pretty engaging, felt like a true story with complex characters. Attached theory really pulls this story together to make all the characters more understandable through the lens of avoidant attachment/anxiety and emotional neglect.

Although it is a beautifully written story, I just can't understand how anyone can "enjoy" reading about such a depressing life. I like reading for pleasure and I get none from other people's misfortunes real or fictional. I really didn't like how the moral of the tale seemed to say that girls who read will come to a bad end.

There is no way to review this book without sounding ridiculous (it's FLAUBERT, it's the LITERARY CANON, various distinguished white guys are POO-POOing!). So I'll say this - the best part of this book for me was the introduction by a feminist author whose name is lost in my Kindle. She stated that Madame Bovary is not at all about a woman as Flaubert didn't like women and he didn't care to know anything about them. It's also not about writing as no one, not even his most fervent fans, could call him a very good writer. It is about very specific men at a very specific time and how they react to a "bad" woman. And along those lines, it's about how critics for hundreds of years react to very bad women as well.

Have never hated a mc so much in my life. Utter sociopathic. Feel so bad for Charles who was a good man and little Berthe. Also why does Emma have absolutely no good attributes; she has done, said or felt no positive things.
