I'll try to come back to this when I am less emotional, but for now...
One of the many reasons why I read fanfictions: you know what's in it, and you can avoid it if needed. It's a heart-wrenching story, Green's writing has improved so much from the first book, and the characters are well fleshed-out, complex, quite stupid (I'm looking at you, Nathan) but easy to support. You want to see them succeed. For the first half of the book, it was actually hard for me to support Nathan, because as usual in the series, a lot happens in the book that we don't know. Nathan is tormented by a lot of internal conflict and emotions, and he doesn't open up to anyone: not to his friends, not to the reader (though it is a first-person POV and an I-narrator). So it is hard to follow him sometimes.

This reminded me of Hunger Games, in that we have an alliance of rebels going against the government and excepting to lose a lot of fighters. Except, it stays happy and hopeful until the last 15 pages or so, so you keep hoping (hence the emotional state). Another reason to read fanfiction: fix-it fanfics.

ahhhhhh, the end was so perfect but also so emotional. nathan becoming a tree was honestly just very very poetic. tbh this book handles grief very realistically and really just rubs it in your face that gabriel is dead. i sobbed more than five times at the end, and i don't typically cry when reading books. this was the first time in my 21 years of life. like,, "wounded, not lost"?? yeah i sure was wounded after crying through three chapters straight. well played sally green
