Fantastic end ? to a thrilling series. I know it will continue but I'm happy with the way things ended up.

All in all a good event. I like that are no true tie ins, as everything is essential. I would like to see a movie.

An exciting culmination to the first chunk of Marvel's cosmic resurgence. I could probably give this five stars, but the last section of the collection (Heralds of Galactus) fell pretty flat.

The final act in the Annihilation war storyline brings Starlord, Nova, Drax against Thanos, Annihilus and Galactus in an epic conclusion to this cosmic event. The story has huge scope and a satisfying conclusion.

Collecting issues #1-6 of the Annihilation miniseries, this is the real meat of the Annihilation story, as a vast cast of characters steps up into the midst of an intergalactic war to stop an immensely powerful tyrant and his army from conquering and/or destroying most of the universe.

Great war story and big epic sci-fi feel combined with the superhero elements, and terrific artwork. In addition, it really leaves off an interesting status quo for the space side of the Marvel Universe, which allows for the launch of the exceptional Nova series by Abnett & Lanning and the "sequel," Annihilation: Conquest, which is actually better than the original in most ways.

Definitely much better than the first two, primarily because the artwork held up across the titles included in the volume. Still not the greatest, but a lot of fun.

Call this a 3.5. The rest of Annihilation is a joyless slog, but this - the event proper - is a huge, fun story in the vein of the original Secret Wars. Cosmic war between heady gods. Characters with motivations that warp and conflict. Keith Giffen is great at writing cosmic beings who speak purely in operatic monologues, which gives Annihilation the necessary weight.

The flip side of this is that he's awful at writing the standard human characters, who happen to be our main protagonists. Nova is a poe-faced, basically useless sourpuss who seems to have become the leader of the good guys simply because he's a nondescript white dude. Meanwhile, Peter Quill is written with a middle-aged comic book writer's approximation of wit, rather than the actual goofy charm of, say, Chris Pratt's portrayal of him. It's pretty unbearable.

That being said, a very solid taste of Cosmic Marvel overall.

Again, this review will probably be quite short because I have already stated a lot of my thoughts on these characters.

I really enjoyed what they did what this series. The story line was well thought out, though there were a few moments that were a bit slow for me.

SPOILERS FOR THIS NEXT PARAGRAPH:

I loved Cammi's story arc in this series. She starts off a very strong character, so sassy and full of spunk, but in this book, she isn't allowed to have a lot of those moments as much. She is, quite literally, left behind when she is trying to have her heroic moment. I completely understand why they left her. Not only would Drax would have killed all of them for putting her in any amount of danger, she also would not have been able to survive. Not necessarily because she would not be able to hold her own, because I am completely convinced that she can and would kick some mega alien ass, but in an emotional aspect, I'm not quite sure she would have been able to come back from seeing what happened. All the death and carnage and hopelessness would have taken a toll on her, so, overall, I am glad she did not go along.

I also loved seeing Galactus' Heralds again. It's always great to see more of the characters who are seen as evil but are able to redeem themselves.

The wrap up of the series was a bit predictable for me, but there were some surprises. There will be some spoilers in this next part, if you don't want to read them, skip to the next paragraph. I knew from the beginning that the Annihilation virus was going to fail, ultimately, but I was okay with it. I liked seeing that not all of the characters made it. Though I didn't like seeing them gone, because I really liked some of those characters, but it was good to see there wasn't predictability.

The last section of this book is just the records from the Nova Corps index that had been shown throughout the previous three books. I didn't really see the need for that, but it's there and there's nothing I can do about that.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this series. I believe there may be one more small comic to read from this series, so I'll have to read that soon.

The final book in the Annihilation series. It was quite a lead-up. I had a lot of fun with all the tie-in books that brought us to this volume and I have to say that I wasn't in any way disappointed.

Is it my favorite Marvel 'event' book?

No.

But that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. It doesn't mean that I didn't get a cosmic-sized slap of goodness across my face...and it was a great start for my journey deep down into all things cosmic Marvel.

Holy shit though have we ever come a long way since all this has happened, hey?
