Very good, including Asian stories for the general Western audience. Nice to see Asian representation. Being an Asian myself, it was surprising to learn about the other stories in Chinese folktale, and what appealed to me in this book is the Disney movie Mulan, but I came away from the book wanting to learn more about the traditional Chinese tales that inspired the modern retelling movies.

Mulan goes on a journey with the healer Rabbit (from the moon and Chang e) to save her sister Xiu from a spider bite poison. On the journey, Mulan is tempted by the White Fox (the lover of Emperor Zhou in Shang Dynasty that was in the tale of Ne Zha too) who is trying to thrawt the White Rabbit. Mulan eventually succeeds and throughout her journey, the White Rabbit makes her realize that she is a mighty warrior that can bring honor to her family, even if she is not the traditional girl with elegance and grace like her model sister Xiu.

Isn't as good as the Minli books, but that's such a high bar, it's not surprising or disappointing. I loved this book, it's not only interesting the entire way through, it's exciting and fun, and I love that it has elements of real Chinese folklore in it. I was very stressed about school and work, sat down, and the book had such a calming, soothing charm that made me fall in love with it by the end of the first chapter.

I'm such a fan of Grace Lin, she never disappoints!

It's an original story where Mulan has a sister who gets bitten by a poisonous spider. Mulan goes off with a mysterious healer to get the ingredients to save her, and in the process, she learns who she truly is.

Such a good middle grade book! I loved the story, characters, and format of the book. If you need more Mulan in your life, check this one out!

I really wanted to love this book but it just wasn't for me. I very much appreciated the references to Chinese folklore, but could not embrace the story line the way I hoped I would.

Lin tells the tale of Mulan's adventures, the ones before we knew her, in the same delightful manner she tells tales in her books such as The Mountain Meets the Moon. A perfect way to learn the backstory of Mulan before the live action movie.

would have been much better if they did not slap the title of mulan on this
