Poems
3.75/5 stars

Rating a compilation of poems is much like rating a compilation of short stories, there's gonna be ones that you love, and ones that you don't care for. It was 50/50 for me.

My favorite of them obviously being Still I Rise

But I also quite enjoyed

The Detached
To a Freedom Fighter
My Guilt
Remembrance
Phenomenal Woman
On Aging
Impeccable Conception, and
Shaker, Why Don't You Sing?

This is the first thing I've read of her and her writing style reminded me of Eric Jerome Dickey. She's pretty raunchy and whichever poems weren't about sex, tended to be about race.

I think my problem was that since this was a checkout from a library, I tried to read it straight through so some tended to bend. I feel like if I had just read a few poems here and there, I would've appreciated each one individually better.

If Maya Angelou doesn't count as a "Classic Poet," she should.

Angelou’s poetry is rich with her voice, and reads rhythmically and song-like. The alliteration is noteworthy, and every word has a purpose in every poem. Some favorites included “Prescience”, “Impeccable Conception”, “Prelude to a Parting”, and “Wonder”, among many others.
