Just finished State of Fear by Michael Crichton and wow—what a ride. Action-packed, surprisingly funny, and way more thought-provoking than I expected. It digs into environmental science and media narratives in a way that feels weirdly relevant right now (without being too preachy).
It gets pretty technical at times, but overall it’s fast-paced, exciting, and hard to put down. Definitely recommend if you're into thrillers that make you think.

What a fun time reading this thriller!
This is a third book I've read by MC and I really enjoyed it! It had a nice blend of thrilling fast action plot and a good amount of scientific facts that I absolutely love reading about.
There were few places were it seemed the characters went on a tangent explaining the science and it felt a bit dense there but overall a very interesting and engaging read based around the global warming and enviromental subjects.
I have to admit, this book made me doubt certain things we are made to believe to be true, but this just shows the author's ability to write good story! (I'd still research the info I learnt in this book though 🤪)

The problem with this book is that it makes liberal use of facts mainly not to construct a narrative, but to convince the reader of a point. And it sounds preachy.
The storyline is passable, but unconvincing, certainly not up to Crichton's usual standards.

In "Welt in Angst" versucht uns Michael Crichton zu erklären, dass die Kassandrarufe der Umweltschützer haltlos seien und in Wahrheit nur dazu dienten mehr Geld und Macht zu sammeln. Crichton, der sonst immer auf die Gefahren moderner Technologien hinweist, sammelt also nun Aussagen und Argumente um die Gefahren der Umweltverschmutzung zu verharmlosen und diejenigen die sich um den Schutz bemühen zu diskreditieren.
Inhaltlich geht es im Kern darum, dass sich der National Environmental Resource Fund (NERF) - eine Organisation die sich darum bemüht ein Lügengebäude über die globale Erwärmung aufzubauen - zur Unterstützung ihrer Theorien Umweltkatastrophen plant, die die Welt von ihren Theorien überzeugen sollen.
Sprachlich ist das Buch zwar wieder etwas besser als sein letzter Roman "Beute", aber die Charaktere sind ähnlich flach und klischeehaft - die Guten sind absolut gut und die Bösen sind absolut böse. Die Dialoge wirken einfach und hölzern. Das wirkliche Problem ist allerdings, dass Crichton ein wichtiges Thema einseitig angeht und Argumente die seiner These von den bösen Umweltschützern widersprechen einfach ignoriert - das könnte man akzeptieren wollte er bloß einen Roman schreiben - aber mit diesem Buch gibt Crichton ein politisches Statement ab, was sich auch im einseitig dargestellten Anhang fortsetzt.
Letztlich bleibt mir nur ein bitteres Urteil: Crichton schuf das Werk als polemische Unterstützung, der amerikanischen Weigerung das Kyoto-Protkoll zu ratifizieren. Wahrlich ein politischer Thriller, in dem Sinne, dass Crichton mit Halbwahrheiten Politik zu machen versucht. Schade dass sich Crichton für die verfehlte Umweltpolitik der amerikanischen Regierung einspannen lässt.
