State of Fear

Michael Crichton

3.35 AVERAGE

This book was interesting, assuming the facts were right. But it seemed like what Crichton really wanted to do was write a position paper on climate change. But instead he made it into a novel, where the dialog comes out as a position paper on climate change. Kind of heavy-handed.

As much as I love Michael Crichton's earlier works, I couldn't help feeling disappointed. He would rather inject his own agenda about global warning than to write an original story that was captivating. His own idea of climate change, making those characters that has the belief about global warming as either corky, funny or just naive in his writing.

It's a controversial topic, but cant help but feel that he tried really hard to prove his point that global warming was an exaggeration that was scientifically incorrect. People who believed otherwise would not find it entertaining.

Author did an extensive reach for 3 years and concluded his point of view to a point whether the argument covered more than half the book in a plot so paper-thin that the only excitement only took place last half of the book. In the end, it felt like studying an argumentative essay or research. I would rather it not to spoil reader's joy of reading with self agenda. It's a big no-no.

Lots of action, this book could easily become a movie. I still think we should be good environmental stewards. The author makes good points of checking resources and not believing the current wave of big news.

I think that when an author gets older and has a long string of bestsellers, he can write anything and it will get published, even if it's poorly written, poorly conceived, or both. Crichton's not the only author I would say this about. This book may have been his last, and it was definitely the worst I read. Every single character in this book is a stereotype. The plot is nothing but a long series of cliches. It's very disappointing to see an author you respect fall so far.
