Gripping. Harrowing. Amazing.

It’s strange that reading a book set where you come from can have so much of an effect. Peterborough is hardly on the literary map (without researching I can think of no other books set there) so this felt quite special to read.
I’ve not lived around Peterborough properly for almost a decade now, but my family still live there so I visit regularly. It made me feel quite fondly for the place.
Aside from that, the book itself was lovely. Whilst certainly chilling in parts, by the end, this was heartfelt, interesting and well worth a read.

Interesting concept that is unfortunately abandoned - 2.0 Stars

This start off following a ghost that is trying to figure out why she was killed by a train. However it quickly devolves into a generic domestic thriller.

Spoiler I don't understand the point of this story. Surely we have enough thriller/mysteries that star abusive/toxic couples. At least other stories in this trope have some sort of mystery elements but in this one we just straight up just get told what happens. It is pretty obvious the dude is abusive but we have to slog through 300+ pages of it.

This book was such a disappointment. I’ve seen it advertised as a mystery/horror/thriller & it doesn’t come under any of those genres. It was a real struggle to get through as I was waiting for the plot to pick up but it never did. The pacing was off for me & the “twist” was painfully predictable. Regarding the subject matter of abuse & gaslighting, there are books that just do it better.

There were several moments in which I contemplated not finishing Platform Seven because for the most part, it was just a really awful book. But I'm glad I finished it anyway even though reading the last quarter of it still didn't change my opinion on this book.

I read Platform Seven for the Literally Dead Book Club and I was actually quite excited for it. The book is categorised as horror which is a genre totally outside of my comfort zone but I was excited to give it a try and was expecting it to be very dark and scary. Instead however, while the plot was pretty dark the book itself just wasn't scary at all and felt more like a contemporary novel with a bit of a heavier theme. In a nutshell, it's a book about a woman whose boyfriend treats her very badly until she ends up committing suicide. It's a story I've definitely seen in other books before and the only difference really is, that she turned into a ghost after her death and is now trying to figure out whether she's remembering everything correctly and whether her death could've been prevented. You would think the chapters about her as a ghost are the most interesting ones but I actually thought the only slightly interesting part of this book was the middle section in which we went back in time to learn about her life.

So all in all, Platform Seven was unfortunately a very disappointing read and I really hope I'll enjoy this month's book club pick a lot more!
