Loved it
Best book I've read this year. Refreshing flashback to the seventies that shows things weren't simpler once you scratch the surface, just different. Enjoyed seeing favorite characters in their younger years. Good story. Well written. AND for once I didn't solve it. Classic Slaughter not like the last few crap outs.

My complete review of "Cop Town" can be found on my blog:

I’ll admit that the first few chapters of the novel were hard going. However, once I really got into the book and grew invested in the characters, I read the novel voraciously. Characterization and setting were equally strong and equally important to the plot. The case of the cop killings was intriguing and well portrayed.
Karin Slaughter is a resident of Atlanta so she is expert at describing her hometown. Relentlessly paced, this is a police procedural which speaks to social unrest and the psychologically damaged. Cop Town is a work of gritty noir for anyone who enjoys a suspenseful, character-driven thriller.

This book gets 3 stars from me. It just couldn’t keep my attention. I never became invested in the story in the way that I couldn’t put the book down. It was quite the opposite—forcing myself to pick the book up. However, the writing style was excellent as I always expect from Slaughter, and the story is compelling in itself now that I’ve finished it.

This one kept me up last night. Slaughter's are the best quality thrillers I've read, and she could give Gillian Flynn a run for her money in the way of atmosphere, character development, and balance. Like the Good Daughter, Cop Town ran me through a full range of emotions without ever feeling manipulative. Have to knock off a star for being able to see the ending coming.
I have to say that this book was not what I expected. That's not a bad thing, just having read a number of Karin Slaughter's prior books it was different. The book is entirely set in 1970's era Atlanta and actually takes place over a period of days. I think if I had thought about that from the beginning, events as they unfolded might have had a different impact. I was glad I didn't realize it, because it made the outcomes of events that much more dramatic.
Not her best, you can tell it was something earlier than her current works. but I did enjoy it for the most part.
I so loved this standalone from Slaughter! I hadn’t realized it took place entirely in 1974 so I thoroughly detested all the characters and the blatant racism/sexism/bigotry which was too commonplace then (and especially so in the South) but, truly, I think she wrote it well and delved into a couple of the characters— Kate Murphy in particular— enough to warrant the crass behavior as a way to emphasize the story and the mystery behind The Atlanta Shooter.
As always she had her mastery of gritty writing on full display and her ability to flesh out real people. The background on Kate’s family (her husband and her mother & grandmother’s trials in Europe) came at the right time when I was so hating the force and was desperately in need of some humanity (and top notch storytelling). I should not have doubted her. Such a great read.

Cop Town is well written and it has a good story. It's just that some of the characters and the overall societal situation are so icky that it was hard to enjoy it.
