“which is why we / get goosebumps / when we hear spanish at the supermarket or when a dead friend’s / sweater hugs us in a dream / the hair follicles click back to life. / the buds shake themselves / awake. / they rise from the grave we insist on digging. / the hairs stand up. / a million ancestors rooting / for the home team.”

“remember your body / the body-a land of feelings we've been told to cut down / we rip the things we hate / about ourselves out & hope / they grow back weaker / but hair is the only thing that grows / the way things grow in the homeland …”
From the poem Mami Says Have You Been Crying

I really enjoyed this book. Sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, sometimes triumphant, it's about femininity and body image and Latina identity and family and a bunch of other stuff. Highly recommended.

Loved the thoroughline of hair and fitting into America and the growth we see

Wonderful, painful, reflective, biting, sour, sweet poems.

The best poems (to me) are the ones I've heard of could imagine hearing Lozada-Oliva performing.   Always love the humour and anger in her work.

This book of poetry made me emotional. Such strong lines and images that work well both as written word and spoken word (I watched her read most of the poems, also - SO GOOD). Some of the phrases, like "maybe she was always the knot in the neck of a garbage bag" will fucking stay with me for a while.
