Between 3.5 and 4 rating.  This book is definitely centered on a subject I don't know alot about.  The author attempts to shed light on the mental health asylums in the US focusing on Crownsville in Maryland.  Most of the patient records have been lost and many of the staff are either quite elderly, dead or not willing to discuss.  The author fills in gaps from oral history and adds other stories within the book to try to bring forward the state of mental health treatment or lack thereof, particularly in the Black community.  Sometimes it falls short but most of the book is very informative.

This book was eye opening. The heartbreaking lack of humanity given to those sent to Crownsville was criminal. To be expected to build your own hospital was horrific. I cannot imagine the pain felt by the families of those whose loved ones were caught in a system that often failed to provide a safe and effective treatment. Antonia Hylton's thorough research was evident throughout the book. The residents of Crownsville Hospital needed the world to know their stories.

A deep and comprehensive look at an asylum in Maryland. Following its history for use to incarcerate and basically experiment on Black people and through its transition from a place of horrors to a place that was needed by some very much in the community. And what do you do with that need when the place is closed? It was incredibly sad but also very interesting.
