Very well researched and written, with the thread of the author’s family history giving a strong personal touch to the story.

Having read books about mental health treatment over the years, it was not entirely a shock as to how inhumane treatment then compared to now seems.  When I visited the abandoned Central State Hospital in Georgia, formerly known as the Georgia Lunatic Asylum, it was terrible to see how patients were seemingly caged in the buildings.

This book covers Crownsville Hospital, an asylum for African Americans in the 1900s, which was just about as bad as your imagination might allow it to be.  Even more shocking was that the first patients there were made to clear the land and build the facility.

The entire story will most likely leave you frustrated as you learn how poorly patients were treated.  Even worse, so many records and stories were destroyed or forgotten.
