What a raw and real story. It connected so many dots for me culturally and historically about mental health and how its been weaponized against Black people Nd the chains of slavery have been redefined and never lifted.

This is a very sad story in history, but it’s a story that needed to be written. I thank the author and everyone on the team for taking the time to research and provide this shocking story to the world before these stories got buried.

Hylton has written a very compelling book. In describing the disturbing history of a state hospital in Maryland, she shines a light on America's poor treatment of African Americans with mental health issues, racism in medicine, and very personal stories of some very determined people. I was initially intrigued by this book because Crownsville State Hospital in less than an hour from my house. I figured this book would have some good Maryland history. I wasn't disappointed there. But the book describes the challenges faced by Americans for treatment of mental health. That aspect of the story was fascinating. This book should be required reading for all Marylanders and ought to be read by all Americans. Highly recommended.

I’ve been debating whether or not I wanted to try for a Master’s degree & also whether it would be in Sociology or Social Work…and this book has definitely given me the push I needed.

It’s so well written with so much information I most likely would’ve never discovered on my own. This one will definitely stick with me.
