Shocking story of a black mental asylum. It hurts to read about the negligence and abuse that people within Crownsville, but that's why it's so important to learn about. Thorough collection of history and many ideas on how to make sure it doesn't repeat.

Such a well researched investigation into Crownsville segregated mental hospital. The balance between wider society and the individuals in the institution (both patients and staff) was great at keeping a huge scale issue human and real. The links to mass incarceration and who has benefited from de-institutionalization were really well developed.

I was excited to read this book but it ended up being a disappointment. The book was poorly organized and would jump around from story to story making it hard to follow. At times I felt as if I was reading an assignment that required a certain number of words. In other words, it felt as if the author was repeating himself a lot throughout the book. The book did have some good information but overall I would not recommend this book.
