My initial impression of the book were of confusion and slight boredom. For whatever reason I had expected more narrative cohesion.
So colour me stupid when I found something that resembled something closer to an essay/travelogue/journal.
The titular character only appears after a beginning that seems to be there to only set the environment. Breton creates the Paris he lived in at the time with use of photographs and seemingly disconnected vignettes in which he sees movies, plays, and talks with his famous friends.
Then Nadja appears and the book starts to feel "surreal" even though Breton seems to be playing it relatively straight. I've heard that Nadja is a symbol for something. Even her name suggests that, as explained in the book.
But I'm not sure. Her presence does bring a feeling but she didn't come across as a disembodied figure only meant to be representational.
In terms of my enjoyment, I faded in and out of passion for the book. Often, the sentence structure was exhausting and the digressions were annoying. Breton seems a little bit like a pretentious prick sometimes. But often the book grabbed me and every word cracked like quiet thunder, or some poetic shit.
Willing to reread for sure but Im still skeptical.

Nadja was a sweet modern romance, relaxed yet easily read, detailed yet vague, as a cloud that has clearly defined edges yet could be a variety of forms.
Beautiful writing and pictures, but please don’t ask me what this book was actually about because I can’t tell you.
