non linear structures can sometimes hurt my pea sized brain but i think maybe it’s the translations fault for the weird sentences that don’t really eat and don’t fit with the rest of the paragraphs??? or is it bretons fault?? anyways !! 3.7!!

Hahahaha I found my notes but then I left them at my apartment today so they're useless. Gotta laugh at stuff like that, since everything else was p good today. Anyway I finished this book, it made maybe a lil more sense the second time but it's not even meant to make sense, thx BRETON. He's lucky he's a very pretty man.

this was confusing!
overall i disliked this book, maybe id have enjoyed it more if i understood it better, but i also got the impression that if i did understand it, i would have found it very annoying and pretensious and french.
but it gets +1 star because i can see what an influence it had on elif batuman, and just made me admire her more for taking unenjoyable stuff like this and turn it into something so charming.
there were also some cool lines! i loved when she said she chose the name nadja because in russian it's the beginning of the word hope, and because it's only the beginning. i also love the final line, beauty will be CONVULSIVE or it will not be at all.

A hallucinogenic tour of Paris, interjected with bouts of surrealist philosophy and mixed with manic-pixie-dream-girl energy (wake up André, she’s just using men as mirrors for herself).
This novella is esoteric to the point of being pedantic. The narrator seems to just have a bad case of ennui, and reeks of “not like other Parisians.”
If you’re looking to get lost in your subconscious, this ain’t it. Might have been better in a magical realist lens than a surrealist one I think. Nothing holds water or rhyme or reason, but if you enjoy that type of thing I recommend being in a very specific mood and finishing this in one sitting. 3.8 stars.
Some beautiful lines that spoke to me:
“I myself shall continue living in my glass house where you can always see who comes to call; where everything hanging from the ceiling and the walls stays where it is as if by magic, where I sleep nights in a glass bed, under glass sheets where who I am will sooner or later appear etched by a diamond.”
“I am the thought on the bath in the room without mirrors.”
“With the end of my breath, which is the beginning of yours.”
“Beauty will be convulsive or it will be nothing at all.”

Étrange lecture que celle-ci. Le style et l'histoire sont prétentieux, alors que toute la narration se veut justement être celle de l'humble admiration d'un grand intellectuel pour une femme inconnue et mystérieuse. J'ai vu sans lire la grande majorité du texte, par ennui et par difficulté à entrer dans le style surréaliste. Pour autant, les rares passages qui ont retenu mon attention étaient vraiment bien. J'ai même retenu plusieurs citations. Mon avis balance donc entre la très mauvaise expérience de lecture que j'ai faite et ce que j'en retiens, et tous les aspects qui répondent parfaitement à mes critères et que j'ai tout de même réussi à apprécier...
