I’m not familiar enough with surrealism or surrealist literature to give a proper analysis of this book. I’m even questioning my understanding of prose now.
It is one star and five stars at once, which is what I imagine Breton would personally consider successful.
Every earned star in my rating is given for the final nine pages of this book. I have never seen such a challenging (and self-congratulatory) work make itself make sense by somehow crumbling together in the end.

I am extremely excited to reread this one day. I think that the surrealist mystery is a wonderful experience, and I can’t wait to dissect it further in the future.

i have never read a book like this one before. walking a tightrope of autobiographical aspects and historical fiction with a slight hint of magical realism doused in the plot too. it was the most accessible read but absolutely one that was worth the read regardless
