If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy

The platonic ideal of a fluffy easy reading contemporary romance. I am a sucker for Cinderella reimaginings and love having a plus size protagonist (who the male lead is attracted to! And she doesn’t have deep seared self hatred for her size! And her plot is focused on other aspects of her life!). But beyond that this is well written, cozy, and had a believable romance and just hit the spot when I was looking for a good romance.

Cinderella meets the Bachelor meets fashion, honey. Perfect rom-com chick-lit, as charming as a Disney prince but with a better supporting cast.

What a delight this ended up being!

This story spoke to the part of me that loves the heavily produced drama of The Bachelor, but also wants to believe that people can find a true love fairytale on a reality TV show. It had a mix of fun drama (“can I steal you for a bit?” 😆), emotional moments, and a really sweet romance. Closed door, in true Bachelor style.

Also loosely inspired by Cinderella, except Cindy (the FMC) had supportive and heartwarming relationships with her stepmom Erica (the showrunner) and stepsisters.

I thought it would be a bit cheesy, but I had such a great time listening to the audiobook. Julie Murphy is a new to me author, but I’ll definitely pick up for her other books!

Omg, I could not stop reading this book. Fashion, true love, family, Hollywood glamor, reality TV, and a classic-with-a-twist Cinderella story. It is a delicious read.

We meet Cindy, a recent Parsons graduate who finds herself jobless after graduation because she pretty much broke down after her father's death. She ends up moving to California to live with her stepmother, two stepsisters, and the triplets. Now hold on, because you don't know where this is going. Cindy actually gets along really well with her stepsisters and is planning to nanny for her triplet step-siblings. Her stepmother, Erika, is pretty nice, too, and she happens to be the producer for a popular reality bachelor tv show, Before Midnight.

When her stepmom gets in a bind, Cindy and her stepsisters agree to be on Before Midnight which is how Cindy finds herself the first, and only, plus size contestant. We get to see a little of the "behind the scenes" of the reality show, as well as Cindy navigates through unchartered waters using the force of her personality and her love of fashion.

I appreciated how deftly Julie Murphy dealt with size and gender issues. Well, really, how she normalized these topics.

I cannot wait to recommend this to EVERYONE!

I loved this so much! If you enjoy the Bachelor franchise (my guilty pleasure) you’re going to love this one.
