Conceptually this was great and I love Sutanto’s voice (even though our narrator was sometimes insufferable). I just felt this fell a bit flat in execution— was it a mystery or a weirdly timed romance? Was it about family and belonging or was it lighthearted and fun? Was there a bad guy or was she just kinda joking? This was just a bit all over the place and it never really hooked me but it was pretty fun.

This book really dragged for me.  I also found it so over the top that it was hard to take seriously.

(3.5) The best part of this book is the theme of finding your voice among strongly opinionated relatives who express their love in overbearingly ridiculous ways. Despite the fact that some characters are very “cartoonized” (which could actually work well for an on screen adaptation), I enjoy the antics…...until the 90% mark where it starts to get a little too ridiculous and shatters my suspension of disbelief.
