BALEFIRE takes Whyborne, Griffin, and the gang to Cornwall to help the Endicotts regain control of their ancestral home Balefire. While this was an important stepping stone in the battle against the Masters I hate how much the Endicotts look down on Whyborne. They don't trust him, call him an abomination, and would rather kill him if they didn't need him. Of course there are a few in their ranks who are learning differently but it's not all of them. As always I loved our main characters and their journey but I never completely warmed to Rupert and Hattie.

Despite my despair in knowing that this is the second to the last book, it in no way failed on the romance, action, or the horror.

As always, our heroes and their band of loyal friends and family are once again challenged by those that fear and serve the otherworldly Masters and their minions. New terrible revelations and a seemingly unbeatable foe awaits Whyborne and Griffin but never fear! Though there is loss, a new vital piece of knowledge is gained which will be the key to destroying the evil that’s inevitably coming.

I don’t know what to say. Each book in this series is better than the last. I’m sad things are coming to a close. This has been a long journey fraught with hardships. Jordan Hawk’s imagination is amazing and I loved every minute of this book.

Not at all where I expected this one to go, plot-wise, and a beautiful twist of expectations once the reveal hits. I am very much looking forward to the final volume (and sad that it is not yet out).

This is perhaps the weakest in the series (although it does well at positioning the characters where they need to be going into the Final Climax in the last book), but it still gets 4 stars because, I'm sorry, this series is brilliant.

It also features a quote that deserves to be commemorated because never have I felt so seen in any novel:

I hesitated, but it had to be said. "If I start to sound a bit megalomaniacal, please forgive me."

Her eyes shone. "You're the greatest arcane vortex that has ever existed. I understand."

I winced. "Er, perhaps, but I'm really just a fellow who gets paid to translate what other people find. I ordinarily try to save my insane ranting for grant proposals."

Me too, Whyborne. Me too.

That was one hell of a ride! Whyborne, Griffin, Christine, Iksander, and Heilabel have to travel to Cornwall to help the Endicotts regain control of their home, Balefire. But, of course, as always, things are not as they seem. This book sets things up nicely for the final (sniffle) showdown and the mysteries of the maelstrom just keep getting deeper! There are some interesting revelations in this book. I am excited for the finale (and dreading saying goodbye!)

YESSS!!!

God I love this series. Whyborne and Griffin’s loving and supporting relationship continues to give me life. Their devotion to each other and the deepest level of care they extend to their family make me all misty eyed.

If you want to read something that offers an absolutely amazing use of the Lovecraftian mythos, fantastic action, fleshed-out characters, and a ton of heart you should definitely check this one out (starting from the very beginning, of course).

The tension is rising, the stakes have never been higher, and I just can’t wait for the conclusion!
