“Later, that dozy embrace solidified in his memory as the single moment of artless, charmed happiness in their separate and difficult lives. Nothing marred it, even the knowledge that Ennis would not then embrace him face to face because he did not want to see or feel that it was Jack he held. And maybe, he thought, they’d never got much farther than that. Let be, let be.“

"One thing never changed: the brilliant charge of their infrequent couplings was darkened by the sense of time flying, never enough time, never enough."
At times Brokeback Mountain somewhat reads like a Wikipedia summary of the movie, which is by no means the fault of this short story, considering it did come first.

But, despite its brusque pacing, Annie Proulx still finds the time for some beautifully descriptive moments. I was also surprised to find a lot of the best lines from the film were adapted directly from the text.

Brokeback Mountain created a knot in my stomach as I read it. The intense longing, and the grappling with hegemonic gender roles and sexuality, is truly gut-wrenching.

At times you could definitely tell this was written by a straight person (I'm looking at you unrealistic gay sex scenes), but Brokeback Mountain is a powerful and heartbreaking story, that feels like a perfect companion piece to Giovanni's Room.

The third person pov is so important for making the setting come to life and be an active component of the story. So sad. Love the gay cowboys. Just finished crying

“There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it” will probably never leave my mind.

Short but well rounded. Sad, complex, intriguing, hard.

Annie Proulx is going to hell for writing this. Not because it's gay, but because it absolutely ruined my life.
