I am inexplicably emotionally attached to this story and I'm so glad I got to read the original text- it was even better than I imagined it to be. I know I sound deluded but let me have this...

I wanted to read something happy to wash the taste of Lolita out of my eyes and I somehow ended up with Brokeback Mountain.
a heartfelt, doomed romance between two tragic cowboys. yearning, star crossed lovers, beautiful mountain scenery and homophobic violence. flying highs and deep lows, all within 55 pages. a quick, queer, unhappy western that I absolutely recommend

i knew sort of what this book was going to be about due to its prominence in popular culture, but i don’t think i was actually prepared for what i was about to read.
this is another book i had to read for my english class and the discussion we had for it has been my favorite so far. there is so much to this book. so many different facets that make you appreciate it even more.
ennis’ fears about his homosexuality are made so much more heartbreaking by the ending of this book. everything he tried to prevent and everything that he was terrified of ended up happening and it is so sad.
i think i’m going to have to watch the movie now just to see how hollywood interpreted this story.

I know it's getting 5 stars because I personally like it as opposed to anything critical. Proulx's landscapes are the best part, followed closely by the dynamic she creates between Jack and Ennis and how so much of what's not said by them gives so much insight into what is being said.

"there was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it" marvelous read

Ennis and Jack both take a job wrangling sheep on Brokeback Mountain where they passionately build a relationship that will follow them both throughout their lives.
Fantastic writing. Very touching.
The ending made me tear up.
Content warning: homophobia, hate crimes

It’s hard to separate memories of the movie while reading the book. I love this heartbreaking story.
