I would have given this a higher rating BUT it is two essays, one short and one long and honestly I got bored halfway through the second (longer) poem and ended up switching to audio so I could finish it faster as I was no longer as invested as I had been in the beginning. That being said SOOOO many great quotes and I am tempted to re-read the part I rushed through in the future so I can annotate some of the quotes that I missed in that section.

I would recommend, but keep that in mind. Not sure I'd say its a quick read.

This is my first time reading James Baldwin and I really enjoyed his writing style. Reading his relationship with religion as a Black man was also interesting to read but also one I am familiar with. There were parts of this, especially when he talked about his experiences with police brutality, that broke my heart over how little things have changed.

I honestly wished I had read from him a lot sooner.

Baldwin was definitely one of the most brilliant people to ever live. Everyone should read this book, no matter who they are, where they live, or what their race is.
