2021 re-read.

Re-reading this book again, it has lost none of the author's power of imagery. I could hear the waves crashing on the rocks, feel the freezing driving rain, and almost see the mist over the moors. In fact after this reading, I have revised my rating up to 5 stars. Dark, dramatic, and compelling.

Mary Yellan goes to live at Jamaica Inn with her aunt Patience and her husband Joss. Patience is not as Mary remembers her and there is something amiss at Jamaica Inn. Can she trust Joss's younger brother Jem? I have read this several times and enjoyed it again each time. I also liked the tv adaptation with Jane Seymour, Trevor Eve and Patrick McGoohan - it's well worth a look if you haven't seen it.

A fierce young woman tossed into impossible circumstances. Leaving means abandoning someone she loved, staying means remaining in danger. She falls in love with a man she thinks too immoral to be worthy, and yet when everything comes crashing down around her ears she feels she’s been the biggest fool of them all.

This was my third du Maurier novel and once again I really enjoyed it. While I didn't think the ending was as strong as My Cousin Rachel and Rebecca, it was dark and dramatic and still really gripped me. I love her writing and the atmosphere of her books. The ominous mood throughout and the vivid descriptions of the moors and the weather really made the book for me. I'm excited to pick up more du Maurier next year.

I re-read this for my book club and I enjoyed it just as much the second time round. I really love du Maurier's writing and the way she creates atmosphere. It's also always interesting re-reading a book with a twist when you know what's going to happen. I'm still not completely on board with the ending, but it's still a really gripping read.
