Elizabeth Acevedo is such a thoughtful author. She wades you into her information, creating a gradual personality for each character. The tragedy discussed in this book rattled me and broke my heart. Acevedo handled it with an expert hand and asked the question “What if we don’t truly know the person we lost?” The verse writing style kept me engaged and reflected the broken up thoughts of those who have lost. Loved this.

Not really my favorite of hers. I think it was too rushed, too much happened in such a short span of time. Some of it also happened too conveniently for my taste. Then I felt like a lot of her language was too cliché. I think that a big problem was the split narrative. Camino irked me at times as well, though I know her feelings were understandably messy; it didn't make sense to me how she'd refer to Yahaira as "gringuita" when she really wouldn't be seen that way because of her features and I know she'd be aware of that. Acevedo still did manage to make the two have their distinctive voices though, and I did love Camino's character in spite of my criticism. She was very genuine and unapologetic. The parallels between Camino and Yahaira were also noted. The book just didn't vibe with me as much as her other novels--I really think it was the length and the pacing that failed me.

3.5⭐️ Review
I have never read any of Elizabeth Acevedo’s works before this one. It’s written in verse. I’ve never read a book in this style before. I quite liked it. I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by Elizabeth herself, and it just made me feel very calm while I was hearing the story be told. *There are some important, but triggering topics brought up, such as death of a parent, sexual assault, and I’m sure a few others.* However it does not press upon these subjects too harshly. The story is about the loss of a parent, however it’s more so about the lessons learned from the loss. Of family. I will admit, this book had me crying one or two times throughout. I liked the characters I was supposed to like, and hated the ones I was supposed to hate.. just overall it was a very good story, told beautifully.
