THIS BOOK!!!!
I read it as part of Storygraph’s read the world challenge and honestly it probably never would have been on my radar otherwise. It’s so vibrant and relevant and everyone, particularly every woman, should read it.
The stories felt both necessary and educational, about the experiences of Black women both on the continent and in the Diaspora. It also felt relevant, to pieces of my own experiences with sexual trauma and being LGBTQ+.
It’s a perfect example of why stories do what self-help and academic books try to do, and they do it better.

An honest and thought provoking gathering of essays. I appreciated the openness of the women who shared their stories. I was surprised by their candor, but it took the book to a whole other level. This would make a great choice for a book club that is unafraid to tackle feminist writings.

I enjoyed the writing and rawness of this book. It included so many different types of African women in the pages and I appreciated having access to their lives in this way. There was something in it for almost every type of women. I think I'd have liked a perspective that included trans women and disabled women.

Sekyiamah does an excellent job portraying the vastly different experiences of African and African Diaspora women in their journeys related to sex & sexuality. This book brings in so many different voices, representing different countries, generations, religions, and sexualities. I loved getting to read so many different womens’ stories.
Although I wish each woman’s story was longer, I understand that the book’s purpose was to highlight many different stories, not to dig deep into just a few.

I don’t have the words to review this exceptional (in a good and bad way) collection. While some chapters were written better than others (with regards to the flow of the story and editing), this collection of essays is necessary. Its the kind of collection that you just have to discuss with other readers. I just finished a virtual discussion with some readers and my heart feels full. I want to have another discussion when the US edition comes out - definitely!
